Volunteering

Kingston Advocacy Group needs volunteers for several important roles in the organization.

You can work directly with partners (clients) as a citizen advocate, you can become a member of the Management Committee, or you can give time to help with office work.

CITIZEN ADVOCACY

To become a citizen advocate you need to be interested in the rights of the individual and to be concerned about people who may be at a disadvantage because of a learning disability or a mental health problem. We do not expect volunteers to have any special knowledge in these areas, but only to have an open mind and the commitment to support a partner through a specific issue.

Training is given in small groups over five sessions. It aims to define the nature and limits of the role of an advocate and to give a background to the work. On-going support is provided through informal supervision and opportunities to get together with other advocates to exchange ideas and enjoy social interaction.

Reliability is essential but the role is flexible - you decide how much time you can offer. We ask, however, that volunteer advocates be available for at least 12 months.

If you are interested in the role of citizen advocate in either learning disability or mental health, please contact the co-ordinator at the KAG office nearest to you. See contact details.

OTHER SUPPORT ROLES

Volunteers may also help provide administrative services or offer expertise with finances or issues of law.
